World of Warcraft - Item Upgrading

The item upgrade lets players boost the gear rating of an item by up 700 points and also add a bonus. Items can be upgraded by keeping them in inventory, and then taking them to the kiln.

Certain items can be upp'd to increase their stats (like a perfectly made breakpoint armour that can be rolled to use in melee PvP) while others like weapons do not vary greatly post upgrade and thus aren't worth upgrading.

Weapons

Upgrades to weapons can increase their numerical stats, such as attack damage, crit chance, and PvE/PvP damage. Weapons also come with an unchanging bonus that increases the damage they deal per second. Additionally some weapons come with a set bonus that activates when three or more of the same weapon are equipped on a single unit. This bonus may exceed the damage that a weapon upgrade can do on its own.

The cost of upgrading a weapon's capabilities is contingent on the rarity of the weapon and its current level. For instance, an upgrade to a +2 weapon requires two standard Smithing Stones while a+3 requires four. The number of stones required to upgrade the gun will increase until it requires a higher level of Smithing Stones. At that point it will reset to one.

Upgrades to weapons can also reroll the stats of the base. This is usually a good factor, but it could also have negative effects. Upgrades can make things unusable, unless you are extremely lucky.

The ability to upgrade item armor items to boost their stats. This can increase the base defense of a chest or helm while belts and gloves will increase their required strength and agility.
