Buying a Double Buggy From Birth

There are plenty of things to take into consideration when choosing the ideal double buggy right from birth. We spoke with Fourth Trimester postnatal retreat expert Katie Billingsley for her advice on everything from seating options to age ranges to folding mechanisms and storage space.

A must-have investment for families with active children, this buggy grows with your family from twins through to toddlers. It's lightweight with great manoeuvrability and can tackle uneven terrain easily.

What type of buggy would you prefer?

A double buggy is perfect for transporting two children, not necessarily of the same age, side by side. They can be used as prams, and they have the ability to recline in each seat so your children can lie down in different positions. A lot of them have plenty of storage space for everything from drinks and snacks to nappies and wipes. They're usually lightweight, fold easily, and compact twin stroller enough to fit in your car boot. If you travel a lot amount, you should ensure that the buggy can be easily pushed around with the folded wheels in your car boot and removed.

You may have seen this type of double buggy on other mothers' strollers or even ridden in one as a kid. They're great for older siblings or twins who want to keep up with you. They tend to be more expensive than side-by-sides and tandem buggies but provide plenty of flexibility and a high price for resales. They're generally easy to steer, come with large storage bins and are able to handle uneven surfaces. Some have a built in ride-on board for children older than and 'cinema seats'.

Do you have twins?

Double buggys are the best way to transport your children, regardless of whether they are twins or older siblings. There are two kinds of double buggy - side-by-side buggies where your children are seated side by side and tandem buggies in which one child is higher than the other. Both can be fitted with two fixed seats, but side-by-side buggies are typically narrower in width to allow for access through doors. Tandems are typically wider overall. They can also accommodate an infant seat and a carrycot.

Do you have a baby?

Being a parent to a child can feel like an enormous responsibility initially, particularly when you must tend to the infant. A double buggy can allow them to feel a sense of belonging if you place them in a baby carrier and push the older child. It will also give your child a sense of pride as they are able to be 'big brother or sister' and help them settle into their new role.
