While robots can't replace a traditional vacuum for picking up ground-in debris such as metal screws and pieces of orzo pasta, they are excellent at sweeping crumbs, dust and hair from pets. The most effective models come with intelligent navigation and object avoidance features that help them maneuver around cords, toys and other household obstacles.

1. IRobot Roomba i3+ EVO

The iRobot Roomba i3+ EVO is a great robot vacuum that has a variety of innovative features that make it more easy to maintain than many competing models. The automatic bin emptying feature is one of the most useful features we've encountered in a robotic vacuum cleaner commercial vacuum. It works well on both carpets and hard floors. The app guides you through the entire process. It's also simple to use and set up. Its ability to resumptuate where it left off in our tests is a great feature. It could do this for 77 minute on one cleaning, and then the battery died.

In contrast to other robovacs that we evaluated, the i3+ EVO comes with an automatic emptying bin that dumps debris into an external dirt compartment on its charging base when it's filled. The i3+ EVO can be prevented from overfilling thanks to a self-emptying container. However it still needs to be manually empty at the end of each cleaning session. The i3+ EVO's internal dust bin holds 2.4L of debris that is enough to last five or four cleaning sessions before you have to replace it.

The i3+ EVO is more effective of removing surface debris when compared to other robovacs that we have looked at, but it's not the most effective in cleaning edges and corners. It's also less gentle on furniture, despite being surprisingly quiet. It was quite rough on furniture as it forced chairs away. It also caused collisions against the sides of the test bed.
